Cheetah sightings are among the most thrilling moments on safari. Whether scanning the plains from a termite mound, stalking through long grass or accelerating after prey at extraordinary speed, they are among Africa’s most captivating predators.

This month, cheetahs have also been in the conservation spotlight, with plans announced to return them to Zambia’s Luangwa Valley ecosystem after an absence of almost 30 years. It is an encouraging reminder that, with long-term conservation and careful planning, species can sometimes return to landscapes where they were once lost.

For travellers hoping to see cheetahs today, however, the question is often a practical one: where are you most likely to find them?

The Serengeti ecosystem remains one of Africa’s finest places to see cheetahs. Vast open plains allow them to hunt using their extraordinary speed, while abundant antelope provide an excellent prey base. Different areas of the ecosystem come into their own at different times of year, making camp selection particularly important.

Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

Botswana is perhaps better known for lions, elephants and wild dogs than cheetahs, yet the open floodplains and grasslands bordering parts of the Okavango Delta provide excellent hunting habitat. Sightings may be less predictable than on the East African plains, but they are often particularly rewarding, and several camps offer exciting game drives with both a guide and expert tracker on the vehicle to locate predators – with impressive success rates!
